It’s Growing Season
This week thee children have been exploring different things that grow.
They counted out some seed potatoes as they planted them and covered them in compost, then watered them.
They made grass heads, using tights, grass seed, compost and eyes. They are very excited to watch the grass grow, as the teacher explained when the grass grows, they can give them a haircut and practice their scissor skills.
They explored herbs - mint, basil, coriander, rosemary and thyme. They used them in water to make potions and in playdough to squish into the dough. They commented on the different smells, some they liked and some they were not so keen on.
They went on a scavenger hunt around the field and woods, to see what they could find that “grows”. They even commented that a feather grows on a bird.
They also planted a seed - they filled a pot with compost and carefully planted two sunflower seeds and covered with more compost. We discussed what the seed would need to grow - water, sunlight and eventually a bigger pot. They took the seeds home to nurture them and hopefully in a few months they will show us some pictures of their huge sunflowers.
The children also looked at some different vegetables, broccoli, celery and peppers, and then used them with paint to create patterns.
